The Green Dragon Competition

websiteOn Wednesday last 22nd Feb, one of our first year students, Niamh Mulqueen travelled to the Radisson Hotel, Athlone to represent our school in the Green Dragon Competition. Once again this year Agri Aware have teamed up with Bord Bia, AIB Bank, FBD and Teagasc and are in search of Ireland’s brightest young innovators!

Students are asked to identify a gap in one of four categories, Environment, Agriculture, Food and Health & Safety and are provided with an opportunity to transform their ideas into functional, marketable, and ideally profitable, products or services.

Niamh's brilliant yet simple idea was the concept of a "Glo-fone"; a simple and inexpensive attachment to a mobile phone which enable it to be visible in the dark. It involved attaching a flourescent cover to the phone of teenagers; or a flashing lighted up alternative; in order to make teenagers visible to on-coming traffic in badly lit rural areas. This product is both original and innovative as it targets the teenage rural market and satisfies the health and safety requirement of this competition. It is envisaged that Niamh's product be patented and marketed on Facebook. Judges were very impressed with Niamh's idea and her articulate presentation on the day.

Niamh’s idea, together with her clear and confident presentation impressed the Dragons so much they want to see her compete at the National Final which will be held in Dublin on 28th March.

Guided by her teachers Rita Forrestal and Mairead O’Sullivan, Niamh has moved through the various rounds of the competition and has successfully reached the final. Well done Niamh with your idea, work and effort, we are very proud of your achievement so far and we wish you the very best in the Final.

The Leaving Cert Fast 2011

The leaving cert 24 hr fast took place on 19th of December and turned out to be a most enjoyable and successful fund raiser. To date we have lodged €4500 and we are very grateful to all those who sponsored us.

00714We fasted for 24 hrs, collected money on the street of Tulla, each leaving cert filled a sponsorship card and we slept in school over night!! The fast brought us all closer as a group. We celebrated Mass at 10pm with Fr Brendon and Fr Martin. We also had a Disco with Fr Carey as our DJ!! Not much sleep was got but nevertheless we all went home on Tuesday with a huge sense of satisfaction and we were very proud of our achievement. The monies raised will go to Sr Angela who works in Kenya.

This year was the 35th year of the fast in Tulla and is a tradition that we are very proud to continue.

Thank you to all our teachers for allowing us to do this fast and helping us, especially Ms Hogan.

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal

Our 1A1 SPHE class, on behalf of Team Hope, organised the collection of gift-filled shoe boxes for webcspeneedy children in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Africa. TEAM HOPE is an independent Irish, interdenominational Christian development aid charity. It is completely Irish and independent, and as well as running the Christmas Shoebox appeal also works in community development projects in twelve underdeveloped countries across the world. In the last twelve years they have sent a total of over two million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in these poor countries. The many shoeboxes collected by 1A1 will make a child not only very excited, but also valued and special this Christmas. 1A1 would like to thank the two volunteers from Team Hope who came to speak to the class and the many students who took part. Well done to Ms Whymes and 1A1 for all their hard work

Fundrun 2011

fundrun2

Congratulations to all those who took part in our 2011 Fundrun on October 28th. The previous week had brought heavy rain so we were delighted that the weather was dry at least for the start of the event.

fundrun1Many students had put in an enormous effort to train for the 8km route. Vera Loughnane(Leaving Cert) won the girls race for the fourth year in a row. Mary Kate Moloney(4th year) came in second and Evelyn Duggan(1st year) came home third. Cathal Lenihan((4th year) took the boys title for the first time, Eamonn Lenihan(Leaving cert) and James Harrison(2nd year) took 2nd and third place. Many others took a more leisurely pace and walked the long route. – Thanks to all the staff and parents who helped with stewarding the event and thanks to everyone on the route who encouraged all of the students home.

fundrun5We are overwhelmed with the positive response to our fundraising efforts and currently €7500 has been lodged to the sports account. A sincere thank you to all students, families, friends and neighbours who were extremely generous in their sponsorship this year.

Report on 1A2 CSPE Mock Presidential Election

ME-web1

On Thursday afternoon, the 20th of October 2011, 1A2 organised a Mock Presidential Election. The mock election was our CSPE action project and the reason for it was to MEweb2demonstrate how an election is held and democracy is a core concept of CSPE. It took us three weeks as there were many jobs that needed to be done. We were divided into groups and each group was assigned a specific job. We chose 1st years, 4th years and TY’s to take part in the voting. On the day everything went very smoothly and people commented that it was very professional. The final result was:

MEweb3

1st place: Sean Gallagher-63%

2nd Place: Martin McGuiness-13%

3rd Place: Michael D. Higgins-10%

Thanks to all who participated in this event and special thanks to Ms Pyne for all her hard work in co-ordinating it.

A Rewarding Night

an1Mol an oige and tiocfaidh si. How true this proverb proved at the annual awards night at St Joseph's on Thursday September 30th. Over 140 students were presented with certs in a variety of areas such as Academic, Spioraid, Sport, Attendance, Enterprise, Media and Gaisce, the President’s Award.

an2The atmosphere was one of pride as parents watched their children being recognised for their important contribution to school life at St Josephs. Inspiring speeches were delivered by our two guests, Ms Clare Kambamettu, Former Rose of Tralee and Ambassador for International Charity Volunteering Service Overseas and Captain Conor Gorey, Instructor, Infantry Weapons Wing, Military College. Captain Gorey had previously assisted our Silver Gaisce recipients in their adventure Challenge.

an4The night was sponsored by Mr Tom Kavanagh who has initiated the “Tomar Trust” in our school to help two students annually attend college with the assistance of a grant of €5,000 each.

Special thanks to Ms Rita Forrestal, Ms Siobhan O’Sullivan and Ms Aileen Whyms for all their hard work in co-ordinating this very successful night.
