Grow Mental Health
On the 6th of February 2013 our transition year class went to visit GROW in Henry Street Limerick to get information for our suicide awareness Y.S.I (Young Social Innovators) project.
GROW is a mental health organisation which helps people who have suffered, or are suffering from mental health problems. Members are helped to recover from all forms of mental breakdown, or prevent such happening. GROW was founded in Australia by Con Keogh and former mental health sufferers. It has a national network of over 130 groups in Ireland. Its principle strength is support members give each other help and guidance from their own personal experience in matters to do with mental health.
GROW has a 12 step programme which benefits its members in many ways. GROW members attend weekly meetings lasting about 2 hours during which a specific group method is followed which enables them to learn practical psychology of mental health known as the “GROW” programme. Members provide support in undertaking certain tasks that encourage a healthy change in thinking, behaviour or relationships. GROW provides access to leadership development for its members to ensure that its groups are both friendly and safe. All leadership is drawn from GROW’s 12 step programme of positive mental health, which has been tried and tested over more than fifty years.
Grow is anonymous and confidential. It is a non-denominational organisation, open to all irrespective of beliefs in that the unique dignity that hope, love and compassion, for oneself and for one another, are essential ingredients in all healthy human living.
We were given a presentation by Christine and James explaining all this. They also told us that, one in four people will experience some kind of psychological or emotional distress in the course of this year. According to the world health organisation, Ireland has the seventh highest rate of suicide in people in Europe in the 15-24 age group.
The GROW helpline phone number is: 1890 474 474

ST Joseph’s, Tulla defeated PS na Trionoide, Youghal in the Munster Colleges (Corn Phádraig) Senior B Hurling Championship semi-final on Saturday at Sean Treacy Park, Tipperary.
In the final, they will play either Dungarvan CBS or Rochestown College from Cork, who meet in the other semi-final this Saturday in Fermoy.
The Tulla school, which draws its players from Tulla, Feakle, Crusheen, O’Callaghan’s Mills and Broadford, led from the start and their win is all the more impressive because they played three-quarters of the game with 14 players.
Leading by 0-3 to 0-2, 13 minutes into the game, the East Clare school was dealt a huge blow when their centre-forward, Diarmuid Moloney, was sent off.
Already without the injured Darren Chaplin (Broadford) and Clooney-Quin’s Sean Shanahan, Tulla faced a real threat.
Their response was impressive as two minutes after the sending off, the Clare school’s captain, Oisín Donnellan, struck for the game’s opening goal and they went on to lead by five points at half-time, when the score was 3-5 to 1-6. Their other goal scorers in the first half were Mark Lynch and John O’Brien.
Youghal were given a great boost just before half-time when they got through for a goal and went on to hold the winners scoreless throughout the third quarter, by which time the winners’ lead was down to a goal.
With just seven minutes remaining, the margin was just the minimum. Colin Corbett then converted a free but the Cork pupils were pressing hard in search of a goal, which would give them the lead.
Three minutes from time, with a goal separating the sides, Dan Vaughan in the Tulla goal produced an excellent save. Tulla then launched a counter-attack and following an excellent run by Stephen Conway, they sealed victory when John O’Brien struck for an excellent goal, his second of the afternoon.
Overall, this was a great team victory with all sectors contributing greatly to the win.

A Fantastic Victory for our Juniors!
Last Saturday, on a sun-drenched February afternoon in Feakle, St Joseph’s Tulla emerged victorious, after a titanic struggle with St Joseph’s, Doon to capture the Munster Colleges Junior D championship on a score line of 3-7 to 3-6. Our girls had been nervously awaiting this replay fixture which was postponed 2 weeks previous due to heavy fog on the University of Limerick all weather pitch. We have been working hard since September in preparation for a big fixture such as this and we were not going to let the occasion get to us.
Tulla began well taking an early lead with points from Evelyn Duggan and Regan Conway both assisted by the hard work of wing forward Laura McGrath and corner forward Siobhan O’ Connell. Two goals in quick succession from full forward Aoife Leamy and corner forward Bridin Dinan half way through the first half gave Tulla a five point lead. However that cushion was short lived. Doon proved their worth with endless pressure down the centre of the field putting our centre back Alannah Ryan under enormous pressure. Further points from Conway and Dinan were cancelled out by two goals from Doon which left Tulla holding a narrow one point advantage at half time 2-4 to 2-3.
The second half was equally tight with both teams fighting for every ball and scores were at a premium. Tulla’s centre forward Niamh Mulqueen and Samantha O’Connor who came into corner forward at half time fought hard for every ball. Both defences were very much on top and in particular Aoife Tuohy, Joanne O’Gorman, Alannah Ryan, Chloe Crowe and Captain Edel McNamara stood out for the Clare team. With barely two minutes left the two sides were level. When a well struck 45 from Regan Conway (Woman of the Match) gave Tulla a precious lead. The Tulla goal keeper, Deirdre Cotter pulled off the save of the game in the dying minutes with a well struck shot knocked out from the top left hand corner. Victory seemed assured for the home side when in injury time a sweeping move which began with goal keeper Deirdre Cotter culminated in a spectacular goal from Sinead Conlon on the right hand touch line which gave Tulla a commanding four point lead.
However Doon were not finished and in the fifth minute of injury time replied with a goal of their own to once again leave only the bare minimum between the two sides. In a tense final two minutes, where Aine Nash and the full back line defended heroically to emerge triumphant by one point 3-7 to 3-6 to annex the junior title to the senior title they won in January.
Well done to our entire panel for the hard work and dedication they have shown in our campaign so far. We are really looking forward to the next few weeks. Training will begin again on Thursday.

TRIP TO UL
Maths Week has been running in Ireland for the last number of years. Having started as a local project in parts of Leinster the project has been rolled out through the entire country. This year our school was happy to sign up and get involved. On Monday October 15th our TY group were invited to an outreach lecture in UL. Dr. Colin Wright gave an hilarious and informative lecture on juggling and the applications of juggling patterns in mathematics. Dr. Wright managed to entertain and keep the attention of over 700 teenagers for an hour and our students were very impressed. In their evaluations of the visit – many students noted that the event had, improved their attitude to Mathematics and had, positively impacted on including Mathematics as a course of study to pursue in future.
MATHS CHALLENGE
Transition Year students and their Maths teachers have been busy preparing and solving Maths puzzles as they organised a Mathematics challenge for first year students. On Wednesday October 18th our Gym Hall and Stage Hall were taken over by the Maths department and the busy hum of determined students – competing to solve Maths puzzles could be heard. Over one hundred students were involved and while our transition year students acted as hosts and facilitators – the first year students had great fun. Cards and coins, matches and mazes were all employed to full advantage in our effort to challenge students’ lateral and logical thinking and spatial awareness. Stickers and Chocolate bars were on offer and the competitive drive of our first years was very obvious. Team work skills were the key to success and one team comprising of Killian Nugent, Kieran Hall and Bridget O’ Sullivan won the challenge outright. Transition year students commented on how they enjoyed helping and getting to know the first year students.
Well done to Ms Mary Liddy and Ms Geraldine Sullivan for organising the events this week.
