In March our 4th year Geography students took part in a field trip to Northern Ireland. Day one began with our cultural tour in Belfast. The cultural tour, delivered by An Coiste, is a Unique Walking Tour given by former political prisoners who share their personal experiences of the British/Irish Conflict. Our guides had an in-depth knowledge of the conflict and many of them have spent long terms of imprisonment as a result of this centuries old conflict. We experienced both sides of the conflict, with Joe taking us up the Falls Road and giving us an insight in to the Republican side of the story. Another guide, Mark met us on the Shankill Road sharing his experiences. After the tour we made our way to the docks to visit the Titanic Exhibition. The Titanic Belfast extends over nine galleries, with multiple dimensions to the exhibition, drawing together special effects, dark rides, full-scale reconstructions and innovative interactive features to explore the Titanic story in a fresh and insightful way. From the Titanic exhibition we made our way to our hostel “Humphreys in Rathmore” in Larne where we had old Victorian style house to ourselves. After a bite to eat and a lot of chatting we made our way to bed for a well-deserved rest after a very long day.

The next morning we headed back up the Antrim Coast taking in some of the most spectacular sights. We arrived at Carrig-a-Rede Rope Bridge. After the rope bridge we made the short journey to the World UNESCO Heritage site - The Giants Causeway. The area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, and a National Nature Reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant's Causeway was named as the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places. After two hours exploring the site and the new heritage site we made our way back to the bus. After a quick stop in Ballycastle for lunch, we hopped back on the bus and made our way home to Tulla.

Thanks to our 4th year Geography students for their great behaviour and to the three teachers who planned and took part in the trip, Ms Fitzgerald, Ms Galvin and Ms McInerney.

Well done to all our Geography Leaving cert students who completed their Fieldtrip write ups on the 11th of April. The project is worth 20% of the Leaving Geography exam. It began in October when we investigated marine deposition and transportation along the Liscannor coast. The 27 page DES reporting booklet has now been completed by all 45 Geography students. Well done and best of luck in the Leaving cert Geography Exam.

Our fourth year LCVP students are currently running a mini-enterprise for Mother’s Day. Students are selling beautiful potted flower arrangements which will be delivered in the school on Friday March 28th, just in time for Mother’s day.
The aims of this project are to learn about running a small business, to become familiar with the activities of sales, promotion, advertising and to improve team work skills. A benefit of the project is that we can support the important work being carried out by PIETA HOUSE, a suicide awareness and prevention charity. All profits from this project will be donated to Pieta House.
We are very lucky to be supported by many local businesses in the projects that we undertake. We have received enormous advice and support, for this project, from Colourful Creations – our local garden centre in Tulla.  A special thank you to Siobhan, in Colourful Creations, whose interest and ideas have been invaluable.

The TY students organised and led the Faith Friends programme with 6th class pupils from 6 local primary schools... It was a great success with the Confirmation pupils learning about what it means to be a member of the church in today's world.  This programme assists the primary schools and the local parishes in helping the young people in preparing for the sacrament of confirmation.

The TY's were excellent and they ran the course over two Tuesday nights in the school hall under the supervision of Ms Hogan, Sr Bosco and Mary Mc Namara. Despite the bad weather attendance on both nights was very good. The TY students would like to express their gratitude to the parents who brought their children to the school on both nights for the faith friends programme.

Munster Champions

DSC 1010

Congratulations to our Junior camogie team who emerged victorious for a second year in a row in the Munster Championship. Our girls faced the stern challenge of Cashel Community College who had come through some tough opposition on their side of the draw to progress through the competition. We knew this was not going to be an easy task but nothing worth having comes easy; especially with the absence of our vice captain, Edel McNamara, due to a burst appendix 2 days before the final. We wish Edel a speedy recovery and hope to see her back on the camogie flied soon.

Despite the pitch conditions due to the recent onslaught of bad weather, our girls worked hard as a team and fought for every ball. We gave Cashel very little time on the ball and closed everything down early. The final score of 3-6 to 0-3 doesn’t reflect what a closely contested match it really was. (Match report to follow).

Thanks to all our supporters. We now face St Louis Grammer School, Kilteel Co Down on Saturday the 22nd of February. Venue to follow.

The Write Touch

DSC 0061 - CopyThe Write Touch in association with ALCATEL ONE TOUCH is an exciting new search for writing talent that aims to give secondary school and third-level students experience in the industry. Over a month ago Hot Press magazine received thousands of entries to their “The Write Touch” competition. Applicants had to write up to 300 words – and strictly no more – about any music subject that they were interested in. They could write about their favourite artist, review an album or live gig, discuss trends or vent your views about any aspect of music you like – or dislike! Hot Press whittled down their shortlist to just 40 across four categories of the competition. The Hot Press team of Editor Niall Stokes, deputy editor Stuart Clark and writer Craig Fitzpatrick were joined by Booker Prize winning author Anne Enright and Royseven lead vocalist and TV presenter Paul Walsh to choose the winners. The public had their say too, adding their precious votes to the mix and out of all of that our winner was picked-Fionn Harrington, 4th year student in St Joseph’s Secondary School. Fionn will now receive a two-week internship at Hotpress where a host of Ireland's leading media figures, journalists, novelists and creative writers began their careers. In addition, he will receive a €250 cash prize and an ALCATEL ONE TOUCH IDOL ULTRA, which comes loaded with an 8 Megapixel camera, large, intuitive touch screen and a host of essential apps.

Fionn is a 16 year old musician and singer. He is currently recording an album that consists primarily of original songs. Fionn’s passions include film and writing and sees a career for himself within the music industry. His article is about imagining a world without music. Congratulations Fionn, on this fantastic achievement from all at St Joseph’s

Fionn's Winning Article-Have a read yourself!

Consider a world without music. An impossible task? But go on, imagine the unthinkable-where there is no channel for your passion, anger, grief, joy, desire. No soundtrack for your emotions. To be unable to zone out to your happy place through the music in your ears-a world where there are no notes, chords, drumbeats…….Where one simple pluck of a string or a blow on a whistle can be so perfect on so many different levels, and different each time you hear it. Where one vocal chord can pull on the heartstrings and make your hair stand on end. Where the guttural roar of a distorted guitar can make your blood boil in fiery passion. Or as they say in Almost Famous “to love a silly little piece of music so much it hurts”.

When you dance to the beat all night long until your legs give out. To study every lyric of your favourite song to find endlessly different meanings. To scream every word along with your favourite band until your throat is raw.

Music is one of the strongest forces on the planet. It can unite a million strangers who have nothing in common but their love of music. How everyone can have one favourite artist who they will follow religiously unto salvation. Take my favourite band since I was eight-Green Day. Their songs, lyrics, vocals, guitar-bass-drum and the personality of Billie Joe Armstrong all seem to sing to me and me alone.

Music is essential to the world in so many different ways. How ten people can listen to the same piece of music and all feel something different, from love to hate and all in-between. But each would say the same-they could not consider a world without music.

On Friday the 11th of October, a number of our Transition Year students helped out with a Flag Day in Ennis for Grow Mental Health Ireland. It being Mental Health Awareness week, we felt it was important to do our bit for the community.

Grow

The below is a letter received from Grow, thanking our TYs and their great effort on Friday

Hi Donna

Please can you pass on our thanks to Deirdre and the Transition Year Students who helped us out with the annual Grow Ireland Flag Day collection in Ennis on Friday. They did a fabulous job and raised €1,004 in total (more than was raised in a collection in Limerick City same day in fact). They were a great bunch of students and really got into it with enthusiasm. I have to say they were very confident, well behaved, polite and friendly so a great credit to their school and their parents. I hope they benefitted from their few hours spent at the coal face of charity fundraising – it’s not easy and they should be very proud of themselves.

They mentioned that they were going to be entering the Young Social Innovators competition and might be doing something in the area of mental health? I wish them the best of luck in that project and if GROW in the Mid-West can be of any assistance in that project, please don’t hesitate to contact us – we’d be only delighted to help out in whatever way we can.

Thanks again.

 Kind regards

 Rob
