ST JOSEPHS SECONDARY SCHOOL

ADMISSIONS POLICY 08

Mission Statement : ‘St Josephs is a Catholic Secondary School under the Trusteeship of CEIST(Catholic Education -an Irish Schools Trust). We are a caring community which fosters belonging and self worth while promoting academic and personal fulfilment.’

The St.Joseph's School Admissions Policy welcomes all students for whom the school can provide an appropriate education. The school aims to provide an integrated and an inclusive education.
Each year the Board of Management will decide in advance the number of First-Year students for whom the school can provide an appropriate education, having regard to the facilities, personnel, plant and resources. All applicants will be advised at the time of application of the number of places available.

Student eligibility for Admission.

In order to be eligible for admission, a student must

    • Attain the required age of twelve by 1 January in the calendar year following his/her entry into first-year;
    • Normally have completed sixth class in primary school;
    • Be willing, in conjunction with his/her parents/guardians, to accept the school ethos;
    • Be willing, with parents/guardians, to accept the school Code of Behaviour.
    • Confirmation, in writing, is required that parent/guardians and the student accept the Code of behaviour.

Selection Criteria

In the event of the school having more applications than places available, the following criteria will apply, (where 1 is first preference and 7 is last):
1 Siblings preference (brothers or sisters of students already in school).
2 Students from bus catchment area.
3 Students whose father or mother is a member of staff in the school.
4 Students whose parents were past pupils.
5 Students who live nearest the school.
6 Students of the Roman Catholic faith.
7 Lottery, when all more rational methods have failed. (Lottery will be supervised by a member of An Garda Siochána)
The closing date for receipt of completed application forms will be decided from year to year and advertised in local papers. The closing date will be printed each year on the application form.
Application Forms are available by calling to, or telephoning, the school office, or from primary schools, or by downloading from the school website (www.sjt.ie)
Late applications will only be considered after all applications received on time have been processed.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS.

In welcoming applications from students with special educational needs, the school will use the resources, both financial and personnel, provided by the Department of Education and Science, to make reasonable provision and accommodation for all such students, and will ensure that these students are free to participate in the life of the school in so far as is reasonably practicable.
School management and parents must co-operate, from the earliest possible time, to establish the special educational needs of the student, the resources required to meet those needs and the submission of a well-researched request to the Department of Education and Science/ Special Education Needs Organiser (SENO) seeking the allocation of appropriate resources. Parents are encouraged to contact the school well in advance of the admissions process should they feel that their son/daughter has special-education needs.

In making provision for special-educational need students, the following information is required.

  • Has the student had access to any of the following resources? :
  • Special-needs assistant or classroom assistant.
  • Special class.
  • Help, for specific needs, from any resource teacher.
  • Assistance with behaviour modification.
  • Psychological assessment. Report to be provided.
  • Any additional resources to help with his/her special needs.
  • Help in areas including, visual impairment, hearing impairment, general learning disability or emotional disturbance.
  • Any resource in relation to travel or mobility, etc.
  • If an expert report is provided, it should include a workable strategy for addressing the needs, allowing for the resources available.

The Board of Management, having gathered all relevant information and professional documentation, assesses how the needs of the special-needs students can be met.
In exceptional cases where, even with additional resources provided by the DES, the school cannot provide an appropriate education due the nature of a particular student’s special educational needs the Board of Management reserves the right to refuse an application for enrolment. (Refer to Special Needs Policy)

Transfer of a student from another school.

The school will make every reasonable effort to facilitate a student seeking a transfer to our school. The Board of Management will decide on applications for admission to any other year other than First Year by assessing if the application:

  • Is in agreement with the school’s Admissions Policy.
  • Is in the best interest of the student at the time of application.
  • Is in the best interest of the school.
  • To enable the Board reach an informed decision, each application must be accompanied by a completed application form, including those sections to be supplied by previous school. (Application Forms available from the school office.)
  • The application should also be accompanied by Copy of end-of-term assessment or Junior Cert. Results, whichever is relevant.
  • It may be necessary for a consultation with the Educational Welfare Officer to take place.

Enrolment Procedure.

Parents/guardians must return the Application Form for Admission to First Year by a date to be decided from year to year. As soon as is practicable, but not later than 21 days after a parent has provided the relevant information, and the final date for receipt of completed application forms, the Board of Management shall make a decision in respect of the application concerned, and inform the parents in writing thereof.
Following admission, an assessment test for all incoming First Year students will be held on a date to be decided each year. This test is used to assess attainment levels in order to best cater for students according to their needs. Parents will be notified in writing in advance of the date of this assessment. The school reserves the right to recover the costs of administration of these assessments.
The school has in place a provision for a voluntary amenity fee, to cover the cost of stationery, postage, photocopying, visiting speakers, etc. The amount will be decided from year to year and parents/guardians will be advised in advance. Contact, in confidence, should be made with the Principal if special consideration is required in relation to this fee.
On completion of the enrolment process, a request will be made for all relevant information to be made available from the student’s primary school, including such matters as attendance record, behaviour issues, special-education needs etc. This will assist the school in making appropriate provision for each student.
