Christmas Exams

Christmas tests began this week for 1st, 2nd & 4th years. They continue for the remainder of the week until Friday 9-12-2016.

Céad Míle Fáilte roimhaibh go léir thar nais go dtí an Bliain Acadúil 2016-2017 i Meanscoil Iosaef Naofa!

Welcome back to our new academic year 2016-2017 and may I wish everyone a very successful year in our brand new building which will be ours to use for the next 25 years. Keep it well. Congratulations to our Leaving Certs who did an excellent exam and are well equipped to meet whatever challenge lies ahead in 3rd level or their chosen field. Bethan Godber topped our results table along with Marie Vaughan. Bethan viewed her scripts and saw that she had gotten 100% in Maths. That was an outstanding score. We wish her well in her study of medicine in Cambridge. Marie is studying Law at UCC.

The four students who won the TOMAR Scholarships on foot of their results were Marie Vaughan, Anna Carroll, Laura Halpin and Niamh Mc Mahon. Congratulations to all! €2,500 is a nice sum to offset college expenses and we are very grateful to Dr Tom and Mrs Marie Cavanagh and family for their very generous sponsorship over the past six years. A first this year for the school, was that Gavin O’Brien won a Naughton Foundation Scholarship worth €20,000 for his studies in a Science related 3rd Level course. The school also got a cheque for €1,000 from the Naughton Foundation for encouraging him. We are delighted with Gavin’s success and hope that future students in the school will compete for this scholarship also.

Overall, we were very happy with our Leaving Cert results. Twenty per cent got over 500 points and 40% got over 400 points. Of our LCA students, 50% achieved Merit grade and 50 % achieved a Distinction. Well Done all of you!
We would like to welcome our new 1st Years, who have settled in well already.
We welcome our new teachers, Ms Ciara Mc Mahon, Ms Mairead O’Brien, Ms Martina Walsh, Mr. Donal Conheady, and Mr John Hennessy and wish you all of the best for 2016-2017.
Our Junior Cert results were also very good this year. We are delighted that Ethan Delaney has been asked to join the Irish Science Olympiad on the basis of his excellent results in the Junior Cert Science and Maths papers. We have had four students chosen in the past four years. This year is a special one in that we have recently had our Official Opening ceremony. More anon. We are really enjoying our new surroundings, the new art work selected by the Per Cent for Art committee headed by Ms Mary Moran. It is the first year that we have our own playing pitch for home games and we hope to enjoy it to the full.
Le gach dea ghuí,

Margaret O’Brien

Official School Opening

It was a day of great celebration when Minister for education Richard Bruton came to our school last week for the offical opening.  It was a great time to see all the people that had worked so hard and spent so much time in getting the school to where it is today from work that had started  on getting a new school over twenty years ago.

School Presidential Vote

Senior students gathered to listen to speeches for school presidents in General Purpose area. Voting took place immediately afterwards where students vote for one girl and one boy to represent St Joseph's for the coming school year.

Lovely September day back at school

Picture taken today of our new pitch and school.  Doesn't it make you wish you were back at school.
